Thanks to "Sculpture and Design with Recycled Glass" artist Teddy Devereux for mentioning the book. Teddy is in an exhibition called "Wild Life," which is an art exhibition sponsored by the City of Raleigh Arts Commission. The art will be on display Feb. 2 to March 26, 2012 at two City government locations.

"A retired scientist, Ms. Devereux now teaches and works as a fused glass artist. Her work draws from her background in science, and has been included in the book “Sculpture and Design with Recycled Glass” by Cindy Ann Coldiron and featured as the cover of the May 2011 “BC Medical Journal.”

"An Eagle Rock woman isn't letting her disability interfere with her goals." "Christa Alford, who has chronic fatigue syndrome, had her artwork chosen for the book "Sculpture and Design with Recycled Glass" by Cindy Ann Coldiron."

"Being among the 40 artists selected from around the world is exciting, Alford said, because she's been making recycled glass mosaics for 10 years. " "She started soon after she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue, a debilitating disorder that saps her of her energy."

"I was very sick," Alford said. "I couldn't leave my house, and of course, I was bored. I always liked mosaics, but I couldn't go out and buy the supplies." "She decided to use glass available in her home."

"I started breaking picture frames and mirrors and putting them together," she explained. She often hand paints the broken pieces, too."

Q: How long have you been writing?

A: I have always enjoyed writing and wrote in college for the Observer (Sr. Staff Reporter, SMC Day editor where I assigned stories once a week, and a copy editor). I forgot how much I enjoyed writing and while working as an artist and writing my own press releases and other marketing materials, my interest was renewed. I have only "officially" been a professional writer for a couple of years (since I came up with my first book idea and was signed my Schiffer Publishing to a three book deal).

Q: Where did you get the idea for your book?

A: I am a recycled glass artist and had been keeping logs on my kiln work (melting temperatures, differences between recycled glass-from windows and bottles and plate glass-and pretested fusible glass, etc). I began to wonder why there was not a book on the topic since there were so many other books on various art glass topics. So I began some online research and found there was no book on the topic and limited technical information on the Internet.

What a beautiful, comprehensive and informative book by Cindy! This is obviously many months of research which includes so many different ways to incorporate recycled glass in today's art. The book is timely too, with recycling being such an important role to save our natural environment. Cannot forget creative too, because glass art is "in"! I was very impressed with the quality of this book. It's not just a coffee table book with beautiful pictures. It is a very beautiful book, but it is also packed with information about the art and the artists. I appreciated that the book begins with a discussion of the use of recycled and discarded glass in the broader context. I especially enjoyed the step-by-step descriptions of the "How-To" projects and the glass hunting anecdotes from artists. I think it would appeal to a wide range of people, not just artists interested in learning more about recycled glass. It is definitely going to be my Christmas gift for art loving environmentalists.

The Book is also doing well in Canada.

Although I am not listing the artists by name individually who had their recycled glass art work selected for this first historic book on Recycled Glass Sculpture and Design, I did want to say thanks to one of the selected artists, Rosanna Gusler. Rosanna mentioned the book in an article on her most recent art exhibition.

"Gusler is a self-made woman who believes if you can read you can learn to do anything. "

"Her glass-making skills came from a book. It has been 12 years since she began working in the medium. She's taught glass classes at College of the Albemarle and will be featured next year in the book "Recycled Glass Sculpture and Design" by Cindy Ann Coldiron, published by Schiffer Publishing."
